A Snapshot of Visible Thinking at Way

Thinking Routine: Question Starts
This routine provides students with the opportunity to practice developing good questions that provoke thinking and inquiry into a topic.

Extended day kindergartners ask genuine and generative questions as they begin their study of bees.
Mrs. Boschert and Ms. Haggerty used this particular routine to encourage curiosity and to increase their
students’ motivation to inquire. Together they developed a unit of study to explore their learner’s interests.

These are unedited samples of student work. The focus of this lesson was on thinking.

“Using the question starts thinking routine really did motivate my students to learn about bees. They were invested and active participants in our lessons.”
Mrs. Boschert - EDK
“Incorporating visible thinking routines into my units of study has enriched and enhanced my teaching.”
Ms. Sanfiel– Art
