Celebrating Our Voices: Bloomfield Hills Schools Honors Speech-Language Pathologists This May

May marks National Better Speech Language Hearing Month! Bloomfield Hills Schools proudly employs 15 full time Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who support the general student population, Wing Lake, and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) program.

What do School-based Speech and Language Pathologists do?

SLPs enhance student engagement and achievement to help them meet academic and social standards. They work with individuals from birth to age 26 in Michigan schools, focusing on communication, language, and speech development. Their specific responsibilities include:

  • Speech and language disorder prevention
  • Assessment
  • Intervention
  • Program design
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Compliance activities

SLP’s  play a vital role in education by collaborating with students, teachers, families, and other professionals to implement effective communication strategies. They primarily assist students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and those at risk for speech and language delays.

The speech department in BHS is a dedicated and highly skilled team committed to supporting students' communication needs. With a focus on individualized care, the department works closely with students, families, and educators to foster speech and language development in a nurturing environment. Their expertise ensures that every student has the tools they need to express themselves confidently and succeed academically and socially.

Bloomfield Hills Schools’ SLPs mission uses a systematic approach to collaborate with families, educators, and students to develop the communication, speech, and language skills that facilitate student engagement and achievement of the academic and social performance standards within an educational setting. Our speech and language supports follow IDEA and MARSE which provide the guiding principles for our services and instruction. Our SLPs value interpersonal collaboration to provide effective prevention, assessment, program design, data collection and analysis, and compliance activities.

BHS extends its heartfelt gratitude to our SLPs for their unwavering commitment to our students and families.
